The Whole Truth About Shayla

The sun was setting over East Hollow, painting the sky with streaks of orange and crimson. Cocoa sat in her car, hands trembling on the steering wheel. She had driven aimlessly for hours, her mind looping the same thought: Should I tell him? Will he even believe me?

Her phone buzzed on the passenger seat. Anthony. Again.

She didn't pick up.

Instead, she turned the ignition and headed for his place. Enough was enough.

Anthony lived in a small loft above the old art studio, tucked behind the riverfront. It was quiet there — too quiet for what Cocoa was about to do. She parked and stood outside for a long moment, staring up at the one light in his window.

Then she knocked.

The door creaked open almost immediately.

"Cocoa," Anthony said, surprised but not angry. His soft eyes scanned her face. "You okay?"

"No," she whispered. "Can I come in?"

He stepped aside.

Inside, the place smelled like paint and sage. A canvas stood unfinished in the corner, shades of blue swirling around the outline of a face. Cocoa looked at it, then back at him.

“Is that her?” she asked.

Anthony didn’t answer. His jaw tightened. “Why are you here?”

Cocoa sat down on the edge of the couch. “Because you need to know the truth. About Shayla.”

Anthony hesitated. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yes. I do.” She stared him down, no longer shaking. “You think she’s perfect. That she saved you. That she gets you. But you only know what she wants you to know.”

Anthony folded his arms. “You sound jealous.”

“I was,” Cocoa admitted. “But not anymore. This isn't about me wanting you back. This is about me not wanting you destroyed.”

Anthony’s brow furrowed. “Destroyed? Cocoa, Shayla is—”

“She’s married, Anthony.”

Silence.

He blinked. “What?”

“Married,” Cocoa repeated. “To a man named Marcus. Lives in Atlanta. She told you she was here for a ‘fresh start’ after her dad died, right? Well, that was half true. Her father did die — but she left because she got caught cheating. With his business partner.”

Anthony stepped back like she’d slapped him. “No. No, that’s not—”

“I have proof.” Cocoa reached into her bag and pulled out the photos. The emails. The screen recordings. “I didn’t want to find this. But I did. Because I needed to understand why someone so perfect felt so off.”

He stared at the evidence in her hands, but didn’t take it. His chest rose and fell quickly. “Why are you doing this?”

“Because I still care about you. And because Shayla’s not who you think she is. She didn’t fall for you because she loved you. She targeted you.”

“That’s a reach.”

“She saw your exhibit opening on Instagram. Realized who you were. She knew your connection to Elias Rembrandt — the man Marcus used to work with. This wasn’t fate. It was revenge.”

Anthony looked like he couldn’t breathe. He sank into the chair by the window.

Cocoa stepped closer, softer now. “I know you loved her. I get it. She’s magnetic. But magnets pull all kinds of things toward them — not just the good.”

He finally took the folder. Opened it.

And there, in a printed email thread, was Shayla’s full name. Her signature. The date-stamped photo of her and Marcus at a charity gala — two weeks before she told Anthony she had “never felt anything real before”.

The silence stretched.

“I didn’t want this to be true,” Cocoa said. “But it is.”

Anthony was crying now, but quietly. The kind of tears that sneak out when your world is unraveling and you’re trying not to scream.

“I don’t know what to say,” he whispered.

“You don’t have to say anything,” she said. “Just… know I told you because no one else would.”

He looked up at her, and in his eyes was something Cocoa hadn’t seen in years — not love, not anger, but trust. Fragile, bruised trust.

“Thank you,” he said. Just barely.

Cocoa nodded, walked to the door, and paused.

“She doesn’t deserve you,” she said. “Not even close.”

Then she left — leaving Anthony behind in the growing darkness, with the truth finally in his hands, and a choice to make.
